A Guide for Graduates and School Leavers.

Whether you’ve gone to university and got your degree, or decided to go into work straight out of school, finding an entry level job can be difficult. Most of the time it can feel like you need experience to get experience. It takes time and persistence, but there are a few places to look.

Here are a few shortcuts for getting your foot in the door:

Job Boards

Websites like Reed, Totaljobs, and CV Library get new postings every day. If you upload your CV, you can get emails about new postings, tailored to your skill-set and location. In-person positions may end up being a few towns over though, so be prepared for that.

Our suggested websites are:

Agencies

Registering with a couple of job agencies is one way to get new positions. Some agencies are geared towards finding roles in certain fields. A lot of postings on job boards tend to be posted by agencies, so it’s easy to register with them via those posts. They can often find positions suited towards your CV, but you may have to attend interviews on short notice.

LinkedIn

Sometimes overlooked at junior levels, LinkedIn can help you stand out! Make sure you have an up-to-date profile (including a photo), and that you’re listed as “open to opportunities”.

Having a good tagline is a good start, ideally listing your qualifications and the role you’re looking for. For example, “2:1 Accounting in Business graduate seeking Management Accounting role”. You can receive updates about new roles being advertised, but there may even be opportunities to professionally connect with the job posters.

The Golden Rule

While searching for jobs, you may tempted to focus on positions listed as “graduate”, or applying to graduate schemes. That’s all well and good, but you shouldn’t rely on them. Expand your horizons by applying to anything within your salary bracket, and before long your career opportunity will find you.

Good luck in your search!
