We take a look at some of the best automotive companies in the West Midlands.

Coventry, Solihull, Wolverhampton

Formerly two separate companies until their acquisition and merger in 2008, Jaguar Land Rover nonetheless maintains two distinct luxury brands. With a revenue of £23 billion in 2019/20, the company aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2039, with the first all-electric Land Rover set to launch in 2024.

Coventry

Founded in 2020, Britishvolt aims to produce low-carbon batteries for electric vehicles. They are committed to sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. While their corporate headquarters is situated in Coventry, they have begun construction their factory in Northumberland, which they intend to have completed by the end of 2024.

Coventry

Headquartered in Israel, but with an engineering centre in Coventry, REE develops platforms for a variety of electrical vehicles. They won an award in 2021 for their latest designs for a commercial vehicle.

Coventry, Redditch

Although the Lear Corporation is headquartered in Michigan, they have manufacturing plants in the West Midlands. Specialising in car seating and electrical distribution systems, including built-in computers, they reported $19,263.1 million in revenue for 2021.

Stafford

Founded in Uttoxeter in 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford, JCB has 22 plants on four continents. Beginning with construction equipment and tractors, they later diversified into power tools, generators, and access platforms. They even opened their own country club in Staffordshire.

Tamworth

This German firm moved into the development of wiring harnesses for cars in 1958 (made out of dinner forks). After securing a contract with BMW, they branched out into car interiors. Today, the company operates internationally, designing electrical systems for cars (including Jaguar Land Rover). Their annual turnover is estimated to be €4.2 billion.

Birmingham

International Automotive Components is a Luxemburg-headquartered firm with corporate offices in Birmingham, which predominantly manufactures instrument panels and door systems. In 2021, they were honoured with a World Excellence Award by the Ford Motor Company. The seek to cut their carbon emissions in half by 2030.

Telford

A subsidiary of Magna International, Cosma has manufacturing plants in Telford and Birmingham. They specialise in making lightweight car chassis and body structures, including axles and suspension. Their sales revenue in 2020 was estimated to be $32.6 billion.

Warwick

Founded in Gaydon in 1913, Aston Martin is an iconic leading manufacturer of luxury cars in 55 different countries, with a profit of £611.8 million in 2020. They were made famous by the James Bond film franchise, with one of their prototypes making a cameo in No Time to Die.

Coventry

Founded in 1908, the London Taxi Company are responsible for the iconic “Black Cab” design of taxis. In 2017, company underwent a re-branding built on sustainability, being renamed the London Electric Vehicle Company, and launching the first electric taxi the following. This was followed by a move into commercial vehicles with the launch of an electric van in 2020.

Droitwich

Founded in Tokyo in 1915 and expanding internationally in 1980s, Koito acquired Britax Vega in 1998 and re-branded their Droitwich site the following year. They specialise in designing lights for cars, with a new line of LED headlamps used in the Nissan Micra and Toyota Yaris, amongst others. Internationally, the company is expected to net £340 million in 2022.

Nuneaton

Established in 1946, the Motor Industry Research Association developed ergonomic and safety features for vehicles. In 2010, they established MIRA Technology Park near their Nuneaton headquarters, including an area dedicated to automotive technology. Most new cars are tested at MIRA Technology Park. MIRA was acquired by HORIBA in 2015.
